Getting Started

You’ve chosen a profession that is dynamic, ever-changing, interesting, and in most cases: Fun, Challenging, and Demanding. You’re going to be faced with lots of “first” priorities, lots of people demanding that you do it all first.  It’s easy to become overwhelmed, confused, uncertain, and frustrated.  Some tips for getting started:

  1. Tomorrow:  No time to plan? Need to buy some time to get organized? 

    How we help:  It’s not ideal, but we all get caught and need help fast.  Here are some ideas to get started right now:

    • Download our sponsored ethics-related LAP Instructional Modules. You’ll be required to complete a two-minute survey after which you’ll get a code that you can use to access more than 70 in-depth lessons. More about our free ethics materials here
    • Projects/Activities:  Grab a mini-case study (Gray Zone, for example), or projects and activities available in our State’s ConnectionHINT: To access this portal, you’ll need to set up a free account. The portal includes free materials available to all teachers in our member states
    • If you have some budget available, our most popular, most comprehensive support is via our online MBA Learning Center. There, you can access a growing list of more than 200 comprehensive lessons you can use yourself or for a very minimal cost, you can sign up your students so that they can work online.  HINT: If you teach in one of our member states, the price you see in our store will be discounted 30% when you check out.  If you’re lucky enough to teach in a state with an enhanced membership, your teacher access to the MBA Learning Center is available at no additional cost; you pay only for the optional student access.

  2.  What to teach? This is the single most important decision you’ll make in every course.  You’ll quickly find that following the textbook (regardless of which textbook) is an easy but ineffective solution.  Textbooks are designed around sales/marketing decisions for the mass market.  Therefore, a chapter 1, chapter 2 approach fails to deliver for most classes.  

    How we help:  Our research teams build sample courses based on extensive industry research. We ask business people what they do and what they know and use their input to build the national business administration standards.  We then design course outlines (and more) based on the national standards.  These “course guides” are available at no cost.  Course Guides

  3. Lesson plan:  The discussion, projects, activities, and presentations for each day is where the real action is.  Schools often require “lesson plans” that follow a particular format.  You’ll have to play by your principal’s rules and build your lessons accordingly.  The most important part of any good lesson plan is that it clearly spells out what you expect students to take away from the experience.  These learning outcomes need to be meaningful – relevant, rigorous, and of real value. 

    How we help:  Our research associates design very high quality lessons that align 100% with the national business administration standards. We call these lessons “LAP Instructional Modules.”  They are outcome-oriented and include all the pieces and parts typical of most schools’ requirements. You may have to do some reformatting and add some local detail, but the hard part is done. With very little time and effort, you have a comprehensive lesson that delivers on the standards. Some of these LAP Instructional Modules are available as PDF’s at no cost.  All are included as part of our online MBA Learning Center, which is a subscription service.  LAP Modules.

  4. BPA, DECA, FBLA:  The best high school business administration programs use one or more Career-Tech Student Organizations (CTSO) to motivate and reward student learning.  Regardless of which you affiliate with, you’ll find many opportunities to engage your students in leadership activities, competitive events, and networking opportunities.  Used properly, the activities offered by student organizations quickly become a very strong inducement to learning.  Be careful that the activities you encourage, including the selection of competitive events, are truly aligned with the learning outcomes of your courses and that they truly align with student career interests.

    How we help: 
    We make the national, research-based standards available to all three organizations. Each addresses them in its own way.  In the area of leadership development, we provide a comprehensive leadership course and a significant number of our LAP Instructional Modules to ensure that the leadership activities of the student organization can be directly connected with substantive content.     For competitive event preparation, we offer a number of helpful tools including detailed competency lists for many of the events, practice test items in our course guides, LAP Instructional Modules, and in our MBA Learning Center.  HINT:  Your students can earn micro-credentials (digital badges) throughout the year; badges are a great way to motivate learning of the same content likely to be part of the competitive events.

  5. Certifications/End-of-Program Assessments:  Most states require some kind of end-of-course or end-of-year assessment.  Each state is different, so you’ll have to do your homework.  Rather than treating these required assessments as a negative (which happens all too often), we strongly encourage you to help students think of them as an avenue to a reward.   Make all of your lessons, all of your CTSO activities (especially competitive events) part of the preparation for the end-of-year exams.  After all, this is where your students have the opportunity to prove to themselves, to their future colleges, to their employer or future employer, and to their grandma that they’re taking with them, something of value from their work with you.

    How we help.  Many states use one of our proof-of-learning tools. The most common are the A*S*K Institute certifications and the end-of-program exams.  Regardless of the exams used in your state, we offer a growing list of “stepping stone” assessments that will help your students along the way.  They are also valuable for helping students prepare for competitive events.  Each comes with its own reward in the form of a digital badges. HINT: If you’re not familiar with the badging concept, think of them as the Boy or Girl Scout merit badge on steroids.  It’s worth your time to learn more and to incorporate them into your planning as a way to motivate and reward all year long.

  6. Don’t be bashful!  Back in 1971, the leaders of our profession recognized that we needed to help one another, to share our resources, and to work together to serve those students who will one day run our economy.  Leaders from 11 states banded together to form this not-for-profit organization.  We’ve grown a lot since then, and we now serve teachers in all 50 states and some foreign countries.  In all that time and with all that growth, what hasn’t changed is our not-for-profit partnership with thousands of business and marketing teachers who work every single day to help kids turn the corner on future careers.
