Institute for the Assessment of the Skills and Knowledge of Business (A*S*K)
Through the business-sponsored A*S*K Institute, we offer independent proof of learning for and about business, marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. A*S*K certification is a critical tool for serious students of business who wish to document their understanding of key business skills, their willingness to be accountable for their learning, and their interest in positioning for employment and promotion.  A*S*K certification includes the appropriate documentation for individuals earning the certification.

A*S*K certification exams are based solely on industry-validated standards and performance indicators independent of courses, grade levels, or other educational considerations. Certifications are comprehensive, challenging, and highly focused on real-world business expectations.  When used as end-of-program assessments, curriculum alignment is particularly critical to help ensure maximum student success. (Exam “blueprints” are available on the A*S*K website.)

Any local school following stringent testing protocol may be an approved testing site. (An independent proctor is required.) The online exams are available from both MBA Research and NOCTI (www.NOCTI.org).  For additional information: www.ASKInstitute.org

Many of our multiple-choice test items are based on scenarios and require higher-level thinking to reach a correct answer.  Although not truly performance-based, these items do attempt to measure the student’s ability to analyze information and to reach appropriate conclusions.  Since most of the skill set for success in business consists of cognitive skills, well-written objective exams can be very useful in evaluating learning and preparation for real-life work skills.

True performance-based assessments, in realistic settings, with real-life scenarios, are the gold standard for learning assessments.  Unfortunately, they are challenging to design and to implement.  We’re working on definitive solutions to ensure high-quality performance-based assessments that can be administered locally.  In the meantime,  we offer a number of tools to support local efforts to move assessment closer to real life:

  • Course guides include rubrics, rating forms, or other tools appropriate for use with authentic assessment.
  • LAP ModulesMany LAP modules, those focused on skills, include scenarios and rating forms that lend themselves to performance-based assessment.
  • Rubrics and scenarios:  These research-based tools are available free to all teachers in member states (via State’s Connection) and to all others via our online store
  • Standards-based projects:  Hands-On! Projects are designed to support real-world project-based learning.  They are aligned to the national Business Administration standards and include rating forms to support realistic assessment. Available free to member states in State's Connection!

Formative testing typically refers to “practice” tests or pre-tests used to help both students and teachers understand what learning has occurred.  Formative testing is generally not used for grading purposes, but to provide guidance to the teacher to help with pacing, review, and in preparation for “summative” testing.  Most of our assessment tools can be used effectively for formative testing.

For each Program-of-Study model (available free to all teachers in member states via State’s Connection and to all others via our online store at nominal costs), MBA Research offers a corresponding online exam that is recommended for documenting student learning outcomes over the entire multi-course program of study. Comparable forms of each exam are offered as (formative) pre-tests (July 1 – November 30 each year) and as (summative) post-tests at any time.

Each is 100% aligned with the national Business Administration standards and is 100% aligned with the corresponding program-of-study to ensure fully curriculum-aligned assessment.

To better meet the needs of highly diverse school populations, MBA Research now offers program-of-study (end-of-program) exams at three different levels or degrees of rigor: Standard, Accelerated, and Honors-Ready. Exams (and corresponding programs of study) at these three levels are progressively more advanced and vary based on the number of competencies or performance indicators addressed, the complexity of these performance indicators, and pedagogical methods used in each program of study.

Standard-level programs of study and corresponding exams are targeted at typical students as well as ESL students and other students with special needs. There are approximately 60 performance indicators per credit/Carnegie unit of instruction at the Standard level.

Click on the following links to obtain detailed information about Standard program-of-study (end-of-program) exam specifications and testing processes.

The Accelerated level is appropriate for students of above-average ability. This level increases both the breadth and depth of content and addresses approximately 80 performance indicators per credit/Carnegie unit of instruction. (Based on field experience, the programs of study and corresponding end-of-program previously offered by MBA Research have been relabeled as “Accelerated” programs of study and exams.)

Click on the following links to obtain detailed information about Accelerated program-of-study (end-of-program) exam specifications and testing processes.

Honors-Ready programs of study and exams are designed for advanced students. At the Honors-Ready level, additional higher-level, complex content is addressed, and there is a greater focus on inquiry, problem solving, and project-based learning. Approximately 90 performance indicators are addressed per credit/Carnegie unit of instruction in an Honors-Ready program of study.
